In Memory of Kay Yow

Kay Yow was in inspiration to most everyone in the Triangle. Her struggle with breast cancer ended this morning as Yow died at age 66.

The Wolfpack women's basketball coach had fought the pain and haunts of cancer publicly.

While doing a story on sports broadcasting icon Don Shea in June of 2007, Kay Yow allowed me to follow Shea as Yow was interviewed at her Prestonwood Country Club home. Yow was done with a recent round of chemotherapy and seemingly gaining on attaining some semblance of health.

I felt, and still feel, quite privileged to be included in her life, even if it was a short moment like that one. Yow was quite accessible given her circumstance. Much like her Wolfpack counterpart Jim Valvano, Yow brought awareness to light when poeple mention the big C.

As a photojournalist, gaining access to private stories is very difficult; however, it is always worth the effort. So many people have seen Yow's story as a positive.

Words such as courage, determination, perseverance and heroic will be rightfully connected with Yow's name. I for one will remember Coach Yow for her leadership.

Every time I see a pink ribbon, jersey or shoelaces, I'll think of Kay Yow. That's positive thinking.

Duke Beats Maryland By 41 Points

Watching Duke absolutely crush Maryland today at Cameron Indoor reminded me of the national semi-final game in 2001, which I was photographing in Minneapolis. Duke was down 25 points and won the game. Once Duke starts making baskets, they seem unstoppable.

This time around, Duke started hot putting them ahead by 25 points in no time before finishing 41 points atop ACC foe Maryland. Maryland head coach Gary Williams was taking the chants from the Cameron Crazies as they belted out "Sweat Gary, Sweat!"

The Blue Devils prevailed 85-44. The Blue Devils were led by Gerald Henderson with 17 points. Duke totaled 23 assists, 12 blocks and 11 steals. The Terps' Landon Milbourne scored 19 points with no other Maryland player scoring more than 5 points. Jon Scheyer chipped in 12 points and Kyle Singler added 11 points for Duke.

This last shot is a "I'm glad it wasn't me" photo. Its fairly dangerous on the baselines as two photographers see Duke's Kyle Singler land atop them in the first half.

Hack A Hansbrough Or Any Heel Will Do

Clemson seemed to clobber a North Carolina player every time a Tar Heel touched the ball. Well the "Hack-a-Heel" approach only proved to fire up UNC's Tyler Hansbrough and teammate Wayne Ellington.

The Dean Smith Center crowd saw a tight first half in men's ACC regular season basketball. The Tar Heels beat the Tigers 94-70 as Wayne Ellington led all scorers with 25 points for UNC. Terrence Oglesby went 4 for 13 from three-point range but still managed 22 points for the Tigers. The Heels saw Tyler Hansbrough score 20 points and Ty Lawson score 15.

At one point Hansbrough left the court and headed to the dressing room but relief fell over the crowd as the Hansbrough hiatus was short-lived.

Tar Heels Blow Past Hurricanes

North Carolina started sluggishly against Miami but rallied as Danny Green turned the momentum to end the first half up by four.

The second half was all Wayne Ellington who drained seven three-pointers in the second half on ten attempts. He missed his first attempt in the first half giving Ellington 7-11 for the game from three-point range.

The next big game at the Dean Smith Center is Monday when the lady Tar Heels host the lady Huskies for a no. 2 v. no. 1, respectively, match-up.

Stephen Curry and the Davidson Wildcats Take on the Blue Devils

Duke managed to gain enough of a lead on an early second half run to hold off Stephen Curry and the rest of the visiting Davidson Wildcats on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in men's college basketball at Cameron Indoor Stadium

The Blue Devils beat the Wildcats 79-67. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 29 points. Duke's Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer each had 22 points.

Curry was impressive. At one point late in the second half he threw a cross-over dribble move on the defender who had no choice but to foul Curry by pulling his jersey from behind.

In the end, it was Kyle Singler who got the final chants from the Cameron Crazies. Scheyer hit a late three to even his total points with Singler, but the Crazies already had their player of the game.

Duke will be staying in the no. 2 national ranking spotlight.
