Phil Ford was surpassed by Tyler Hansbrough for the North Carolina basketball career scoring record on Thursday at The Dean Smith Center and Ford was on hand to witness the feat.
The Tar Heels had no worries about defeating the visiting Purple Aces of the University of Evansville. The question of the night was when, not if, Hansbrough would score his 9th point of the game to eclipse the standard Ford set in 1978 by ending his college basketball career with 2,990 points.
Ford's story led the way, the Carolina Way that is. After Ford's junior season in 1977, the legendary Dean Smith told Ford where he would be picked in the National Basketball Association draft. Ford didn't even think about "The Association", Carolina was his association.
Ford stayed for his senior year without a second thought which takes us to last Saturday's game against Oral Roberts. Head coach Roy Williams believes in the Carolina Way. Williams could have left Hansbrough in that game but Williams benched Hansbrough after scoring 26 points, just eight shy of Ford's mark.
Surely Hansbrough could have scored nine more against the relatively weak Golden Eagles to pass Ford?
Hand it to Roy Williams for giving recognition to Ford's accomplishment. Ford could not make the December 13th game and Williams, although not publicly, wanted Ford to be on hand when the 30 year old record fell.
7:41 to go in the first half. The record fell. Ford was there.
The reigning National Player of the Year from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, had surpassed the legendary Ford's mark but did it the Carolina Way.
It just wasn't much of a contest between Duke and UNC-Asheville. The winter break saw a reduced Cameron Crazies crowd. UNC-A's consolation was keeping the Blue Devils under 100 points; Duke scored 99.
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski gave the referees an earful most of the game. The play was scrappy at the beginning with Coach K starting an abnormal five for the tip-off.
Gerald Henderson and Kyle Singler eventually showed Duke's dominance with some great dunks to warm the crowd's Holiday spirit.
North Carolina beat Oral Roberts 100-84 in men's college basketball as the Golden Eagles from Tulsa, Oklahoma made a visit to the Tar Heels home court in the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The win put the Tar Heels at 9-0.
On the Oral Roberts side, Robert Jarvis put on quite a show with 26 points as Jarvis registered a complete game of 40 minutes on the court. Hansbrough scored an equal 26 points in 29 minutes of action.

N.C. State dominated the game against North Carolina on Saturday, November 22, 2008 in Atlantic Coast Conference College Football at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Wolfpack beat the Tar Heels 41-10. NCSU quarterback Russell Wilson threw for 279 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Wolfpack players were waving a North Carolina state flag proclaiming themselves the state champions. The Wolfpack have now won three straight while the Tar Heels have lost their last two.
The loss puts the Tar Heels out of contention for the Coastal Division lead and a shot at the ACC championship game. North Carolina must beat Duke to become .500 in the ACC.
The Wolfpack are looking to become bowl eligible as the go into the last weekend with a 5-6 record. The Pack hosts Miami at Carter-Finley.
The Heels started T.J. Yates. Coach Butch Davis replace Yates late in the game with Cameron Sexton who was cheered by the crowd in blue. Hakeem Nicks caught four passes for 56 yards.
Beside the fact the Wilson was the better quarterback, the Wolfpack dominated both sides of the ball. On the offense the Pack's Andre Brown rushed for 86 yards on 20 carries. Owen Spencer caught three passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.
It has been an intriguing year for the Triangle ACC football teams. North Carolina, N.C. State and even Duke have a lot of great talent on their rosters. UNC needs a win to secure a shot at a quality bowl game.
You can see what I see on the court next as I will not be shooting the last weekend of football. A special thanks to Steve Kirschner and Kevin Best of Carolina, Art Chase and Ben Blevins at Duke, and Annabelle Myers and Brian Reinhardt at N.C. State for making my Fall Saturdays go smoothly.
North Carolina hosted Kentucky in a match-up of two of the most historically significant college basketball programs. Unfortunately, Kentucky is in a down year and UNC is loaded. Even with out Tyler Hansbrough, The Tar Heels defeated the Wildcats 77-58. Deon Thompson scored 20 points, his career-high, to help top-ranked North Carolina beat Kentucky. National player of the year Tyler Hansbrough was in street clothes unable to play due to an injury.
North Carolina hosted the University of Pennsylvania at the Dean Smith Center in men's college basketball. The Tar Heels won but offered the Quakers hope as the Ivy-league underdogs were down by 10 late in the game.
Of course, Tyler Hansbrough, Marcus Ginyard and Mike Copeland were in street clothes which made the Heels look a little less intimidating on paper and on the court.
Despite the loss, Penn seemed to enjoy the atmosphere of the Dean Dome.
North Carolina hosted Georgia Tech in a battle of ranked teams with the Tar Heels prevailing at Kenan Stadium. Later in the day, Duke hosted N.C. State with the tilt going to the Wolfpack.
UNC's Hakeem Nicks broke the career receiving record for North Carolina. Now 7-2, the Tar Heels are atop the Coastal Division of the ACC but Virginia Tech holds the tie-breaker which is head-to-head.
Meanwhile, the Wolfpack remain hopeful for bowl eligibility which would require them to win their remaining games. The Blue Devils need to win 2 of their last 3 to go bowling.
I once again had the pleasure of photographing the Tune Swingers Orchestra on mischief night. I was again amazed at the grace of the dancers and the fluid music.
I had my wife as a photo assistant as I had the chance to use some new lighting equipment including the Canon 580EX strobes and the ST-E2. It also coincided with our 4th wedding anniversary. It was great to get the chance to have her help me in my work world. She did a wonderful job providing a mobile strobe to add a rim light, side light and main light.
The verdict on the transmitters and slaves is they do a great job in tight quarters. The quality of light is optimal. It took me very little time to get the hang of adjusting the light ratios between two strobes.
I also had a set of 4 Alien Bees (800's) with Pocketwizard Multimaxes. It was great to finally have control of the lights from the transmitter as I had used only the Pluses in the past. I used honeycombs to reduce the spill light in such tight quarters. I had a set of 4 honeycombs varying between 10 and 40 degrees. If I had to do it again, I would of liked to have had 4 of the 40-degree honeycombs.
Lighting can be a lot of work but is quite rewarding.

North Carolina hosted Boston College at Kenan Stadium on Saturday, October 25, 2008 and the Tar Heels came out with a convincing win. Hakeem Nicks had another brilliant performance at wide receiver with 4 touchdowns. The big play, however, came from the defense as a long interception return by Kendric Burney landed the Heels on the 1-yard line. The 45-24 victory for the Tar Heels puts them at 6-2 on the season. The Eagles are now 5-2.
I shot the Tune Swingers Orchestra a couple months back but am posting this gallery as I am photographing their Black Magic event this week. Held at the Raleigh Elks Club on October 30, the event will see the orchestra in black tie formal wear and hopefully the dancers will be equally dressed up. Although many of the attendees are in their later years, there are plenty of younger dancers learning from these experienced "pros". For more about the Tune Swingers visit their site.
James Taylor, legendary musician, plays a free concert on Monday, October 20, 2008 at Fetzer Field on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus in support of United States Presidential candidate Barack Obama. The event was part of the Change We Need Concerts and touted "James Taylor is 'Goin' to Carolina' for Obama". Taylor will perform in Raleigh and then in Wilmington on Tuesday. A photo I shot in the 5th grade, circa 1985, with a plastic Holga. These cameras had three choices for focus: portrait, group, mountains Reminiscing on my past has been quite entertaining over the past couple of weeks. I have found some unique photographs in my archives including the first photograph I remeber taking. I am amazed how many different mediums I have used in my career. I have shot with a Holga plastic camera, a pinhole camera, Polaroids, 4x5, 2&1/4, 35mm, the early digital cameras and now the latest and greatest digital SLR's. I see many photographers going back to the old tricks as they have become niche product. Photogs are shooting the Olympics with Holgas, wedding portraits with tilt/shift and even daring to go back to film for corporate work. I am all for it. I am so glad I held onto my college camera, a Nikon 8008s. I miss the multiple exposure feature which seems to have been pushed to the waysides with Photoshop. Call me a purest, but if you can produce the effect in camera, its way better.
Chuck E. Cheese ended up sketching a classic. Six fellow photographers finagled our way into a photo booth during a going away lunch for one of the three interns. We had a Canon EOS 1D Mk II with us but this low res sketch is by far the best shot of our lunchtime adventure. Being there is half the battle and that is true for the photo booth at Chuck E. Cheese.
