The Center of The Universe

A man is encouraged to drink from his shoe with the crowd at McSorley's Old Ale House in New York City chanting "shoot the shoe" on Saturday, March 24, 2007. The man said he recalled people drinking rounds from their boots which would have made a more poetic chant, "shoot the boot". McSorley's is the center of the universe as far as old time pubs in NYC are concerned.

5D Shutter Bump

This photo of NCSU-VT basketball was taken in March 2007 at the ACC Tourney. It is a classic face swipe basketball picture. Unfortunately, the shutter speed was 1/320th instead of 1/5ooth after accidentally changing the shutter on the 5D. I recently switched to Canon and am finding this problemic with the 5D which is really not a sports shooter's camera of choice. The full-frame and CMOS quality, however, allowed me to shoot this image with a 70-200mm f2.8 focused at the down court baseline with a 1.4x giving me a 320th at f4 at 1250 ISO. The frame is considerably cropped. Just shows that being there is half the battle in making good pictures.

Repetition and Humor

I shot this photo on a feature hunt in 2005. The annual Durham Fair was being set up. I love the colors and the the way the mini-jet on the bottom right is repeating the worker's facial expression on top right. Humor in photography is often difficult to capture especially when photographing adults.

Hot Spots and Luck

This photo of UNC's Elizabeth Guess after scoring a golden goal to win the ACC title is one of my favorites from 2006. Guess is rim lit and seems to be in a hot spot where the other athletes are slightly darker. Minimal color toning was needed and the word "championship" appears in the background. These elements combined with a great expression made this shot worth waiting out the overtime.
